Lawnmower

Our old school Flymo H40 Hand mower was doing the trick for a couple of years while our lawn was actually grass. It was a good workout, good for the environment, quiet, and didn't require any fuel (all people power). Unfortunately it wasn't doing a thing for our yard once it turned to a sea of tall, dry weeds and seeds. It was quite comical actually because the weeds would just lie down when the Flymo went over them, then stand up again once it passed. Phil kept coming in the house with all these seeds and stuff in his fur and we were sick of the look of it. So we finally decided we'd have to get a real lawnmower. We got a 4 stroke Sanli PowerMulch. It's pretty sweet, check it out:

Camping in the Riverland

We've just had a fantastic weekend camping in the Riverland, along the Murray River. We explored quite a bit of the area including Blanchetown, Waikerie, Kingston-On-Murray, Barmera, Berri, Renmark, Monash, Cobdogla, Loxton, etc. We didn't have very good maps with us so it's been fun trying to work out where we were on Google Maps after we got home. We ended up camping in Loch Luna Game Reserve, which is between Cobdogla and Kingston-On-Murray. It was a great spot, with lots of birdlife and frogs croaking through the night. Only downside was that it was hot and we hadn't organized bug screens for the van yet so in order to have the windows open to keep cool, we had to spray ourselves with bug spray to keep the flies and mozzies away. It actually worked quite well because not one fly came in and I didn't have a single mosquito bite (impressive because they love me). But then we woke up to a huge swarm of bees surrounding the van. Apparently there were plants there with pollen they wanted because there must have been hundreds of bees. The buzzing sound was quite disturbing so we didn't stay long in the morning but it was a great secluded spot. We even saw some kangaroos both on the way in and on the way out of the reserve. Pictures will be up on Flickr soon but until then here's a map of where we stayed:

Darren's RQF Secondment

We have some great news to share. Darren recently put in an expression of interest for a role with the Research Quality Framework (RQF) Team. RQF is the federal government's new system for distributing research funding. He found out this week that he got the position. It's an 8 month secondment so he'll still have his permanent job at Campus Central Magill to go back to if he wants. He'll be working at Mawson Lakes campus (30 min drive from where we live) so no more walking to work but it's a fantastic opportunity. He'll be project managing the submission so it will be challenging and hopefully rewarding as well. Way to go Darren!

we're booked

We've booked our flights to the USA for June 2008 so we can attend my brother Jason and his fiance Kathy's wedding in the Bay Area of California on the 21st. We fly out of Adelaide on Friday the 6th of June and depart from San Francisco on Wednesday the 25th. We're planning to drive up to Oregon before the wedding and stop at Lassen Volcanic National Park and Crater Lake. We hadn't planned to make another trip across the pond quite so soon but we're looking forward to it.

New Wheels

We went on a last minute adventure to Melbourne over the weekend and bought a 1989 Mitsubishi Delica 4 wheel drive van and drove it back to Adelaide. I haven't been using my car much for about the past year so we figured it would be better to replace it with something we can have some fun with. These Delica vans are rare so we had to go to Melbourne to get one. It'll be great to have because we won't have to pitch a tent (we'll have a bed in the back) and we can go anywhere since it's 4WD. Cool huh? Now we just have to decide where to go with it first!

Home Safe and Sound

We made it home safely from our 5 week journey. We had an amazing trip but we were ready to come home. Phil was spoiled by the neighbours who visited him at least twice everyday to feed him, brush him, pat him, etc. Luckily he hasn't decided to move next door so far. We've got 2500 pictures from the trip so it may take a while to go through them all, but we'll share them with you as soon as possible. Thanks to everybody who made our visit in the USA such a great one. We're expecting you all to come visit us now.

Auckland Photos

We've uploaded pictures from our 2 night stay in Auckland on our way to North America. (click on the picture to see the rest)

We didn't have enough time to venture beyond the city but we had a great time in Auckland. The traffic wasn't so fun but the food was delicious, the people were friendly, the culture was interesting, and the scenery was beautiful. While we were there, we walked the streets, went up in the Sky Tower, drove across the Auckland Harbour Bridge, and visited Mount Eden, Albert Park, and Auckland Museum before our 12 hour and 15 minute flight to San Francisco. We will definitely have to go back to New Zealand to venture beyond the big city.

Stay tuned: Many many more pictures to come....

My First Painting

While we were in Tasmania, we saw a lot of art in galleries etc and I told Darren that I'd like to try and paint something. So Darren got me some painting supplies for my birthday this week. I decided to paint this picture of Phil. The painting is A4 size which is a little bit bigger than 8x10. I'm pretty happy with the result. Once I come up with another subject, I think I might do it again.
