I'm a Permanent Resident of Australia! I submitted the application a few weeks ago and was waiting to hear the outcome. A registered letter came in the mail yesterday saying that I got it! No interview necessary. So Darren and I walked over to the Immigration Office on Currie Street at lunch today and got the proof put into my passport. Cool, huh?
As the laws are now, I'll be eligible for Australian citizenship in 2 more years. I'll only do it if I can have dual citizenship though, which is up to the American Consulate at the time so we'll see what happens there.
You can read more about the entitlements of Australian Permanent Residents if you're interested. What it means for us is that my income will be considered for a home loan (banks usually require you to be a citizen or permanent resident) and I can live in Australia for as long as I want and travel outside the country for at least the next 5 years. Not too shabby.
